Natural Calamities with a purpose?

The usual rainfall we get every now and then is recognised as an event part of the water cycle. Rain is a natural phenomenon which brings clean water (used to) back to ground-level, in other words, it is a regulating mechanism for clean water.
Fires on an uninhabited hill somewhere on the globe are not uncommon, it seems natural that they'll burn once a while and make the ground fertile again.
Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Typhoons perhaps have their own role too, albeit very destructive and anti-establishment to Man.
Heavy rain kills the massive settlement of ants, fires that break out tears down the homes of many animals and Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Typhoons sometimes take away what we've endeared ourselves to.
